So, new behavior is more consistent. Sorry. Not quite true. It was and is possible to mount root as wd1a by booting with -r ("config kernel root on wd1") or -a ("config kernel swap on generic"). "root on wd1s[a-h]" should also work. -a only supports slice = compatbility slice, partition = 'a'.
