There is no login step. I see the login step very clearly. You are presented with a "username" prompt (i.e. "t-s-modem>"). You reply with your "user" name ("ppp solitaire"). Then you get a password prompt and reply with that. See /usr/share/examples/ppp/ppp.conf.sample, the "pmdemand" entry, for a setup very similar to the one you are looking for.
