 Have you looked at using rhtvision package for this? Although I
 haven't mucked with this package in quite some time, I seem to recall
 it (at version 0.7) being too broken for any real use (really ugly
 screen displays), although that was on Linux. 
 
 The rhtvision library is an actively maintained port to Linux,
 including support for the GPM mouse interface. If anyone's interested,
 I can provide a URL, but you also find it by searching Freshmeat for
 'rhtvision'.
