Their value is that when A compares unfavorably to B, it motivates A to get off their laurels (or their fat butts, whichever they are resting on), and *fix* the problem. Sometimes, this type of comparison is the *only* way to motivate action... laurels are (apparently) quite comfortable; so comfortable that people would rather rest on them than act where action is needed.
