The purpose of /etc/defaults/rc.conf is to provide an explicit list of all of the startup tunables, with their default values, so that you can selectively override just the things you want to tweak. Only, the way to do that is not to edit /etc/defaults/rc.conf, but to change /etc/rc.conf.
