The best and final (I think) solution is to add --disable-libusb to the configuration options in cups-base/Makefile and rebuild. I tested this on 8.0 rather than 7, and didn't try printing, but I verified that the USB backend sees the traditional /dev/ulptx device rather than using libusb, so I think it will work for you.
