FreeBSD has historically used 32-bit values to identify inodes, which limits file systems to somewhat under 2^32 objects. Many modern file systems internally use 64-bit identifiers and FreeBSD needs to follow suit to properly and fully support these file systems. =E2=80=9C=E2=80=9D=E2=80=9D With Isilon OneFS we currently support multiples of petabytes of = storage ( = https://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/white-papers/h10719-isilon-onefs-t= echnical-overview-wp.pdf ), so this matters very much to us. It=E2=80=99s = also useful for other file systems though (assuming they can scale that = high).
