I am using the internal SCSI model with good success, and
I'm sure the external SCSI version would work just as well.
I do not think the IDE version would work.

All SCSI tapes are more or less equal in the eyes of the
kernel.  You need a SCSI controller listed, of course, and
a line like

device          st0

for the SCSI tape driver.
