One day, while skimming through -questions or -current, you will see a
user complaining about problems in a piece of the system that you
maintain - what's more, complaining about a bug you think has already
been fixed. Suspecting that the user is running an old version of that
particular program, you will ask "what version of foo.c do you have in
your source tree?". The user will reply "how do I tell?". Then you
will be enlightened.
