Hi,

If anybody cares: The problem ceased to exist for me. It did not cease
all by itself, but during the last two days I did (besides other
things :-)

1 Install FreeBSD 4.2 STABLE from scratch
2 Upgrade to 4.3 BETA (cvsupped on 8.3.01)
3 Install StarOffice52 (which obviously was updated too - at least a
30 MB patch was downloaded which was not already present on my
  distfiles)

Now any of these steps could have been the point, but I' quite sure I
can exclude (1) - I reused my complete /etc directory, and the setup
was OK (everything else worked fine).
