Hmm.. have you looked at the directory structure on the FTP site?
There are more ways to download/install FreeBSD than I can count..

If you want to copy the files to CD then use the ISO's that are available
under:
/pub/FreeBSD/releases/<yourCPUType>/ISO-IMAGES/

With <yourCPUTType> replaced with either i386 or alpha..
