I don't think that FreeBSD 5 will become the stable branch quite as soon as the 5.0 release. It will take some time after that for it to be considered stable enough to be called -stable, if that makes sense :-) You can rest assured that the upgrade path from 4.x to 5 will be well documented in the 5.x release. When upgrading systems, the file to read is src/sys/UPDATING. If you use cvsweb you should be able to find the -current UPDATING file which already contains documentation about how to upgrade.
