I've just compared asc 9,0 in an Exabyte manual (I don't have a 34580A
manual handy), and it says "tracking error".

How long does it do this for? More or less than a minute?

A new computer or a new DAT drive? Judging by the report, I'm
assuming a new computer.

There are a couple of things you should check:

1. You don't have a 120m cartridge, do you? The 34580A can't read
them (but it should report the fact, and not go into deep
    meditation mode).

2. Have you cleaned the drive with a cleaning cartridge in the last
    25 hours of operation?

3. Does it work with a new cartridge? It looks as if you're trying
to read an existing cartridge, and if that's not in good
condition, it could cause these problems.

If none of these apply, I'd guess that this is very similar to a
problem I have had a number of times. I had it on a BSD/OS machine,
which doesn't (didn't) report the error in so much detail, but it did
cause a panic at least once. In every case, I have had to replace the
drive. It seems to be some kind of hardware error, and the best bet
is to change the drive. The good news is that all 35480As are still
under guarantee, so this shouldn't be too big a problem.

Other people: have you had problems like this? In the past two years,
I have sent three 35480As and a C1533 back for this kind of symptom.
I haven't seen similar problems on other makes, and it's getting on my
nerves. I'm estimating that my next failure will be in May or June.
I intend to write to HP and ask for an explanation, so any supporting
evidence would be useful.

Hope this helps.
