The other respondent asnwered this for you. '/etc/rc.conf' is the file
you are looking for.

With respect to getting files via ftp:

ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE

If you get the entire directory that will surely cover it. To get the
entire directory 'ftp> get 2.2.5-RELEASE.tar'. The ftpd will tar it all
up and send it to you. This is pretty neat but probably time consuming.

Fetching the '/pub/FreeBSD/2.2.5-RELEASE/src' will get you the "base"
distribution, including kernel sources, bin and sbin.

With respect to doing the upgrade:

You can use '$ /stand/sysinstall' to effect an upgrade. Be sure to read
all the warnings and back up important configuration files.

You could also just wipe out your disc and start from scratch. :) I have
done this a couple times but I only recently migrated from the MS camp.
Hey, I didn't know. Unix provides a better alternative.

You can also track the "stable" development branch using cvsup to keep
your source tree always on the leading edge of stable FreeBSD
development. This is not really upgrading per se, but it is related.
