I had the same trouble - but only when I incorrectly specified which drive to boot from. Make sure that it's accessing the correct disk, eg, wd or fd or whatever, and the correct partition/drive.... hopefully your kernel is still where you left it! :) It gives you a brief summary before it attempts to boot from the default drive setting. Hit the space bar or whatever to give you some time to read the details then try to find the correct command.
