There have been some optimizations backported to gcc in CURRENT that add in stuff like newer instruction sets I believe. The base system compiler is moving towards clang/llvm and it's now possible to run a clang kernel/world on CURRENT. Efforts are underway to change the ports system to allow for a more pluggable compiler eg clang/gcc44/gcc45/gcc46. -- Adam Vande More
