Can he boot from a boot disk first and back up /etc? That's always a good idea. Add that before reinstalling: use the fixit floppy and back up /etc to somewhere safe. It shouldn't WIPE /etc, but files will probably end up replaced. Thanks for the hint....matt, you listening?
