It's evil, but will be harder to fix if libkern gets out of sync with the
library.

How do you want to fix it?  I think "pure" modules like strlen.o should
be extractedfrom libc.a.  It's stupid to use an optimized strlen in libc
and a slow generic one in libkern.  OTOH, my libkern/mcount.c looks like
this :-(:
