Nope, check "anachronisms" in K&R, at least the 1978 edition p 212: "Earlier versions of C used the form =op instead of op= for assignment operations. This leads to ambiguities, typified by x=-1 (and so on) That would have to be REALLY old pre-1978 code to be affected.
