Whatever this is, it is almost certainly not tied to the mesa update. Usually it shows up with a multi-second graphics freeze and no other obvious issues, but it is entirely possible that the loss of video acceleration had been caused by this for a long time and I just have not noticed as I only have been running with acceleration for a fairly short time.
