I haven't had any trouble with my FreeBSD VMs (HVM). I  have found that 
the cpu timer eats a lot of performance on some versions of FreeBSD.
I set "kern.hz=100" in /boot/loader.conf to mitigate that. I'm not sure 
if it's still needed on 8.1.
