In the past when my / has filled up I've moved some of the directories
like /tmp/ (which was totally filled by the StarOffice installation) to
/usr/roottmp/ and then symbolically liked these directories back to
their original locations.

I've never had any problems with this configuration, but I'm not sure if
it's totally safe or recommended.
