These are Good Things(TM), and to be encouraged. And also that a list of the installed files is recorded in /var/db/pkg, making it possible to remove the software using pkg_delete, instead of doing it by hand and perhaps forgetting some bits. And also that if the maintainer is conscientious about keeping the port synchronized with the software, users can find out about updates by watching for the "New/Updated Ports" announcement.
