I browsed through /usr/src/share/mk and * /usr/src/etc/make.conf and didn't find this ... We can certainly add a commented-out sample to make.conf. I don't think we need to add anything about it in bsd.port.mk. The actual build part (and the variables) differs from port to port, and error checking is about all we can do in *.mk files.
