Subject:   tar makes the kernel crash

I was doung a tar -xvf ports.tgz

after a while the kernel crashes wit this message:
/kernel: unexpected machine check:
/kernel: panic: machine check

then it dumps a few registers and the pid and name of the program
comm=tar

anyone have some idea what it could be due ??
