After some quick thinking, I think I wanted it to fetch its requisites and =

should go without building, but apparently there is some cargo cult (pun
intended) there that crams hundreds of source files into the distdir.=20

I think the go world is the offender here and should provide a way to fetch
inputs with building go first. It's not as expensive as rust, but still
surprising.
