As much as I appreciate your efforts to close PR's that have actually been solved and/or are no longer relevant to the state of our code, IMO this is entirely the wrong response to a PR that is actually still a problem and more importantly has an active audit trail. This would have been an excellent candidate for suspended status which would put it in the large category you're creating of things that we'd like to fix but need someone to deal with them. As you state so eloquently this is a volunteer project, but discouraging people from contributing (even those who can't necessarily contribute code) is not the way to make a volunteer project succeed.
