Real Networks frees code (UK) -- Hoping to seize ground as the de facto industry standard for multimedia players, RealNetworks has released the source code to its RealOne client and related audio-video codecs. Through a project dubbed Helix, the company is calling developers to "download the source code and actively participate to drive this mass medium of Internet broadcasting to the next level." RealNetworks is particularly keen to compete with Microsoft and Apple for presence on non-PC and embedded devices. Licensing for commercial use of the Helix client is only 25 cents, compared with much higher fees planned for the new MPEG-4 format. Without the RealAudio or RealVideo codecs, licensing is free for the first million copies sold and 10 cents thereafter. The company will release the source code for servers and encoders later in the year.
