Typically, you would open the files from within the program itself. For example, if you want to open an MP3, you would start up your favorite MP3 program, and from within that program click File... Open... ,etc. For what it's worth, I could not get kmpeg to work on my system, but I believe that it depends on the type of sound card you are using. Kmpeg relies on OSS drivers, if I'm not mistaken.
