I haven't been following this thread, but just happened to see this one
message.  I went through a very similar hassle with my Seagate (Conner) CTT8000
TR4 tape drive some months ago.  I called both Seagate and Adaptec tech
support, as I recall they both told me the tape should be async, and they were
both wrong.  The tape gets set up in synchronous mode and works perfectly.  It
does *not* work correctly if I force async mode.  As Doug says, it seems most
likely that there's something wrong with the application.  I have yet to find a
Unix backup utility that I really like, having been spoiled by Retrospect on
the Mac.
