I went through a very similar hassle with my Seagate (Conner) CTT8000 TR4 tape drive some months ago. I called both Seagate and Adaptec tech support, as I recall they both told me the tape should be async, and they were both wrong. The tape gets set up in synchronous mode and works perfectly. It does *not* work correctly if I force async mode. As Doug says, it seems most likely that there's something wrong with the application. I have yet to find a Unix backup utility that I really like, having been spoiled by Retrospect on the Mac. -Randy To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe aic7xxx" in the body of the message
