This is something to do with the way the BIOS deals with memory
above 16MB (I don't know the technical details). The solution is
to tell FreeBSD explicitly how much RAM you have. Add the following
to your kernel config file and rebuild the kernel. Note that you
*must* include the quotes as the argument contains numbers.

     options         "MAXMEM=(48*1024)"
