It's probably a DNS resolution thing.  Check out the FAQ at 
http://www.FreeBSD.org/FAQ/userppp.html for what you might want to 
do.  Also, check the `ndc' command.

There's better PnP support in -current - but I guess that's not what 
you want to hear :-|
