You have missed a step, you need to enable the inetd and add a line in 
/etc/inetd.conf following:

sgi_fam/1-2	stream rpc/tcp wait root /usr/local/bin/fam	fam

You should be able to find the info in the devel/fam/pkg-message. I use 
daemontools instead inetd.
