Sounds like you need somthing in the way of a system admin manual as well as a unix basics... _Unix_System_Administration_Handbook_ by Nemeth et.al affectionately known as the "red" book.. covers lots of different OS's but gives specific for each where necessary.. use the BSDI model for most of your stuff.
