 Try running with debugging enabled.. there is a command line option
 to do that.. ircd -x {debuglevel} check the man pages for more information.

 It's the one that I have always used and never had any problems... I
 cant say best.. but It works and is stable.

 Sounds like you need somthing in the way of a system admin manual as
 well as a unix basics...
  
  _Unix_System_Administration_Handbook_ by Nemeth et.al 
  	affectionately known as the "red" book.. covers lots of different
	OS's but gives specific for each where necessary.. use the BSDI
	model for most of your stuff.

 And i am not sure on a "unix basics" manual ...
