The support for ATAPI CD-ROMs in FreeBSD 2.1.0 has been fairly
`green'.  Do you have any chance to try one of the recent boot
floppies from a 2.2-SNAP version?  (I don't think you will be able to
use this floppy to actually install a 2.1 CD-ROM with it, but then you
would know for sure whether this is your problem.)
