I installed it without making any changes, so it should be set to all defaults.

I had top running in a window and was watching for the many processes
that httpd starts, they never started.

I am starting it as root. And I believe it is by default on port 80. I haven't
changed that.

This is from the ports collection, just a standard install, via ftp from 
freebsd.org ftp site.
