To me, the best reason to have an external modem is that if it somehow gets
all wonky, you can turn it off and reset it without turning off the 
computer.  I had an internal modem once that would overheat once in a while,
locking up solid.  Nothing to do but shutdown.

That said, I'd still rather have $30 in my pocket than have nifty LEDs to 
look at or not have to shutdown to clear a modem.  With a little research
you can find yourself an internal modem that works well for a reasonable
price.  Got my phone line hooked through the surge suppressor, and my
computer overvalued on the homeowner's insurance :) (that's just a joke,
insurance people!).
