It is worth using ifconfig to find out the current duplex setting of the card, then use ifconfig to change the duplex setting. You may need to look at the man page for the driver you are using as not all drivers use the same method for changing the duplex. Also, numerous network performance issues were resolved as of 4.5. It may be worth upgrading to 4.5 or 4.6 to see if the problem goes away.
