While I don't know that it's you main problem, I check protection on
the device. Also, I have never used dvdrip, but I'd look closely at
the default device it looks for. Many DVD applications try to access
/dev/dvd by default. (E.G. Ogle). Make sure it's /dev/acd0c.

Also, your DVD is running in PIO mode. This will provide very poor
performance. Set it to DMA with hw.ata.atapi_dma=1 in
/boot/loader.conf and reboot.
