The beginning and end of the message sequence look similar to the
messages on a cabling problem I saw a couple of years ago on FreeBSD 4.3 .
Apparently the combination of excess cable and some bends in our
cable produced reflections that messed up the signals.  Whether that
applies here, I don't know.
