IIRC, cdrecord opens up each device to do an inquiry on it.

So if you don't have enough pass(4) devices in /dev, you may not see some
of the devices that are there.

So make sure you have /dev/pass{0-4}.

Another way to make sure you have a pass device for cd1 is to do:

camcontrol tur cd1 -v
