As far as I know the Bootware boot ROM was designed primarily for DOS booting.

Did you tried the existing network boot support in

/sys/i386/boot/netboot ?

There exists support for 3c509 (and possibly 3c579 but I did not tested
it). Adding changes for other members of Etherlink III family must
be easy.
