We might be able to get away with temporarily replacing the
i386/include/atomic.h[1] with the one from -stable and using gcc 2.7.

At some stage, we need to confirm that a -current kernel will work
with a -stable world - or add the incompatible bits to the list of
things to build first.

At least, no more horrible than the aout->elf procedure :-).

I think that a suitable upgrade procedure should have been thought
through and implemented before the changes were committed.  It would
also have been nice to have a CVS tag.  It's a bit late now though.

[1] It's just occurred to me that the solution for atomic.h is to
    make the asm constraints dependent on the gcc version.  Anyone
    willing to commit a change if I submit patches?
