The following reply was made to PR ports/10377; it has been noted by GNATS. In FreeBSD, fetch supported proxies and http before ftp did. In 1994, bsd.port.mk used ncftp, which was a pain to maintain. It switched to fetch in 1996. The NetBSD ftp(1) was ported in 1997.
