Dependencies for ports * are on explict versions, which can often be annoying. It's only for packages though. (By the way, If someone can make think of a way to make packages depend smarter, I want to hear it!) As for m4, it could be because the m4 port installs the executable as "gm4", to avoid confusion with /usr/bin/m4.
