http://www.cdrom.com is Walnut Creek CDROM, and they have CD's of
FreeBSD which contain both the OS (freely copyable...one copy 4 many
machines, LEGALLY!) and also manymanymany other programs which will
replace all the  windows junk you wasted your money on. 

Be aware that the tradeoff is that you need to have the patience to
learn to use the new software, but with 17 machines, you will be able to
leverage your experience. This list and any book on Berkeley UNIX will
be your guide, as will all the other UNIX aficiandos out here (that's
us!)
