Howdy, Has anyone here played with one of these drives with FreeBSD? These drives, of course, have an extended SCSI command set that allows access to the on-tape memory chip for the storing of index information, etc. My understanding is that when used with a plain, vanilla SCSI tape driver the AIT unit behaves just like a regular 8-millimeter drive (just with higher capacity and better throughput perhaps). Access to the other AIT nifty features (fast access times, no need to rewind prior to tape removal, etc.) requires a driver that utilizes this extended SCSI command set. Am I right here? Any further comments? Has anyone been thinking about adding support the extra AIT functionality to the standard SCSI driver (or pehaps making a separate AIT driver)? I should have one of these drives (installed in a nifty 28-tape library!) to play with in a few weeks. I'll be fine without support for the extra features since I mostly just care about the high storage capacity. Pleace cc: any replys to me directly since I'm not on the -scsi list.
