Yes, unsetting LC_CTYPE did it for me (was set to de_DE.ISO_8859-1).

But I still think this is a bug. mozilla shouldn't go crazy if a language
pack for locale setting isn't installed...

Maxim: Perhaps we should reset some environment variables in
ports/www/mozilla/files/mozilla.sh
