Since I sent the appended inquiry, I have upgraded the machine to
4.1-RELEASE following the procedures in /usr/src/UPDATING. I still see
exactly the same symptoms.

If you, the reader, have any ideas at all about this, and if you are not
able to give me a more detailed answer or to refer me to a suitable
place (e.g. some specific online document, or some specific book) that
has the answer, I will appreciate it if you will send me a quick private
reply and check one of these possible answers:

[ ] not enough information to diagnose the problem
[ ] question not suitable for freebsd-ports, should be sent to _____
[ ] silly question not deserving of an answer
 [ ] other: _______

Thank-you!

Subject: Xfree86-3.3.6 ports misbehavior

Environment: FreeBSD 3.5-STABLE built on July 16, 2000, and the ports
listed at the end of this email. (Also many other ports, but the
ones listed seem to be the relevant ones.)

I.
No .xinitrc file in my home directory. After I give the command
'startx', I see the standard X-windows dotted background and the 'X'
mouse pointer. Then I see three windows generated by some default
window generator. Then about 5 seconds later these windows disappear
and only the dotted background and the 'X' mouse pointer remains on the
screen. Nothing happens when I click the mouse buttons. I have to exit
with Ctrl-Alt-backspace.

II.
If I create a .xinitrc file in my home directory and in it put
the line
   exec startkde
and then type 'startx', I see only the standard X-windows dotted
background and and 'X' mouse pointer. No windows, no kde, no blue
background, even after waiting enough time to let any kde processes
start. I have to exit with Ctrl-Alt-backspace. (Note: The 'startkde'
program is in my execution path.)

In both cases, after I type Ctrl-Alt-backspace and the X system exists,
I see as usual a large number of lines about various possible screen
resolutions. (All machines on which I have used X-Windows always
show similar lines about possible screen resolutions.) None of the lines,
however include any error message about why the windows (in case I)
close after a few seconds, or why startkde (in case II) did not run.

Questions:
- In case I, why would the windows remain on the screen for a few
seconds and then disappear?
- in case II, why would kde not start?
- in both cases, where would one find any error messages?

The list of installed ports is appended below.

NOTE: Since I do see the dotted X background, and I do see some windows
appear for a few seconds, I am assuming that the X server in use is able
to write to the SVGA hardware properly. The problem is almost certainly
not due to the X server being incompaible with the display hardware. It
looks more like a software bug somewhere.
