Many thanks!  I tried disabling  ATA/ATAPI DMA.  That didn't work.  On a
hunch, I disabled device acpi and bata bing, it boots clean.  It's
acting as a server box, so I don't think I'm missing much.

As a reference, it's a MSI KM4M-V, and the system is using the SATA
drives
